This medication has been used for diabetes management for decades. It has been recently approved by the FDA for weight loss under the brand name Wegovy. It is in a class of drugs called GLP-1 RAs (glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists).
This medication delays gastric emptying by reducing glucagon secretion. This makes you feel full, reducing your caloric intake, reducing your appetite, reducing food cravings, and improving impulse eating.
If your BMI is over 27 and you have weight-related complications, or your BMI is over 30 and you have no weight-related complications. Semaglutide is contraindicated in patients who have a family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
This medication is administered as a once-weekly subcutaneous injection. The good thing about this is you only have to take this medication once per week. This medication suppresses your appetite 24/7 without the stimulant effects of other weight loss medications. Tirzepatide is also available.
